Hugh Daniels Appointed to Int’l. Assoc. of Emergency Mngrs’ Certified Emergency Mngr Commission

Park City’s emergency program manager is one of only 1582 Certified Emergency Managers in the world and one of 10 in Utah.
Hugh Daniels, Emergency Program Manager for Park City Municipal Corporation, has been named to serve a three-year term on the International Association of Emergency Managers’ Certified Emergency Manager Commission. Daniels was nominated by the IAEM USA-Standards and Practices Committee and approved by the IAEM’s USA Board of Directors.

The mission of IAEM is to “serve its members by providing information, networking, and professional opportunities, and to advance the emergency management profession.” The CEM program is a key component of achieving this mission.

This commission peer-reviews all candidates applying to be either a Certified Emergency Manager or Associate Emergency Manager (AEM), as well as all renewal applications. Daniels was named to the North American Review Commission, which is one of two commissions worldwide.

Currently there are only 1582 CEMs in the world, reflecting the rigor of the selection process. The application includes sitting for an exam, submitting an essay, completing 200 hours of training, and demonstrating three years of full-time emergency management experience, as well as experience managing two real disasters or full-scale exercises. Each applicant also needs to complete six of twelve activities outside their job for the industry, such as serving as an officer in the state trade association, winning awards, serving in a leadership role, completing a research project, or mentoring other emergency managers. These requirements ensure that only the most prepared and knowledgeable candidates are awarded the designation.
Daniels will begin his term in January of 2016.

“CEM certification sets a very high standard for professionalism and knowledge for those working in the field of emergency management,” Daniels said. “I am honored to help ensure that my fellow CEMs are meeting these exacting standards, and thereby helping fulfill IAEM’s mission.”
